Welcome to samaru’s microcosm!

I put together this site to rant and bitch about whatever I think is cool or just plain stinks. What do I deem as cool? Well, for example: web dev, psychology, and pizza are cool. What stinks? The LIRR, telemarketers, and garbage water.

So what the hell is “samaru”? Who knows. One day I needed a new username for an Anime forum, so I wanted something Japanese. I originally selected the name “Masaru” from the main character of the Anime, “Sexy Commando Gaiden Sugoiyo!! Masarusan.” This Anime is about a high-schooler who’s fighting technique includes doing ridiculous things like taking off his pants and showing off his underwear as a distraction. The Anime is downright hilarious.

Anywho, I liked the character, but I wanted something more original. I picked the name “samaru” figuring it’d be a less popular name in the Anime community, which indeed it was. I really just wanted a new name I can use on forums as apposed to my old name, “inscissor” which I’ve been using since the old BBS days. You can still type “inscissor” now in Google and get pages related to my postings, including my MySpace page.

Most of the info about me is in my MySpace page. Here’s just some info I left out that goes over how I spent most of my time.

Work 40% - What can I say, this takes up most of my time. Whether it’s at my full time job as a web developer, or working as an independent contractor providing web solutions, this has me running around all day including the weekends. I deal with Microsoft technologies in the daytime, and switch over to Open Source technologies in the evening. I mostly do client side development in the daytime using: JavaScript, ASP.NET (C#) and Visual Studio. Also I use Photoshop, Dreamweaver, for web design.

In the evening, I switch it up to server side development: PHP + MySQL with Zend Studio and SQLyog. I also keep ColdFusion fresh in my mind because most of my internal home software I’ve created is in ColdFusion. What can I say, I still prefer ColdFusion Studio to this day over Dreamweaver for CF development.

Friends / Family 30% - The most important, is just chilling with friends and family. Playing with my pups. Going out for dinner, the movies, drinks, and playing pool, you know… that sort of thing.

Anime 5% - Anything Anime related. Watching new Anime and posting in Anime forums. I mostly watch Shonen action like “Bleach,” “Naruto,” “Hajime No Ippo,” and “Rurouni Kenshin.” Also, I really enjoy drama, like “Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien.”

Music 5% - Includes playing the piano (Chopin and Beethoven are my favorite pianists) and mixing up new trance songs. I use Dance eJay, Techno eJay, SoundForge, ACID, music@passport and an old wavetable emulator called WinGroove. This also includes listening to this genre of music (classical and electronica) to get the creative juices flowing.

Art 5% - This is me drawing and sketching different things. From landscapes to comics to wildlife. I tend to just stick to my favorite medium which is pencil on paper. Both graphite and colored.

Reading 13% - Reading about technology, the web, psychology principles (mostly social psychology and personality theory) and other fun stuff.

Video Games 2% - Playing games and emulators. I like to play Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max and Legend of Heroes (currently) for the PSP. I don’t really play any computer games – most of the games I play are on the computer, but they are old games that are emulated, like SNES games (Legend of Zelda, Legend of Gaia, Secret of Mana).

Other?

Of course, this doesn’t include my entire schedule. This chart doesn’t include me sometimes being a lazy-ass and just bullshitting around the house. Sometimes I just doze off, listen to Opie and Anthony, watch whatever’s on TV, or pop in a DVD.

Actually, come to think of it, I just tend play it as I go along so that chart above is probably completely useless.
